Silk flower hair clips

It’s been a while since I’ve done something crafty with my daughter.  About a month ago at the farmer’s market, a teenager was selling her handmade silk flower hair clips, and to support a local, budding artisan, we purchased one of these flower clips for our daughter.  She wanted us to buy one for every friend, and at $10 a pop, I told her that we would make them for her friends.  We are going to put these into the goody bags for her upcoming birthday party.

We stopped into a craft store to pick up a handful of silk flower stems.  Now having taken apart many flowers, I would recommend that you buy the least expensive flowers.  They have cheaper construction and therefore are easier to deconstruct.  Silk flower leis would work well too.  We also picked up a box of jewels, a spool of ribbon, extra hot glue sticks, and alligator clips.

Step 1: Take apart all the flowers by pulling off the stem and removing the plastic stem that holds together each layer of the petals.

Step 2: Select whatever petals that are pleasing to the eye and hot glue them together one layer at a time.

Step 3: Select a jewel, and hot glue to the center of the flower.  The jewel will hide the flaws beneath from the glue and the holes from the plastic piece that held together the original silk flowers.

Step 4: Wrap the top prong of the alligator clip with a small piece of ribbon.  We hot glued the ribbon to the clip to secure it.  This creates a larger surface area to glue the flower onto the clip.

Step 5: Hot glue the silk flower to the alligator clip.

It’s as simple as that.  Eight flower stems made 24 flowers. We used 3-4 layers for every hair clip.
