NO MORE CANDY FOR CAMP FIRE USA BALCONES COUNCIL KIDS
Camp Fire Kids Save Water and Raise Money, Awareness with “Absolutely Incredible Kids” Water Conservation Campaign
Austin, Texas – March 29, 2011 – Less than 25% of our community knows where their water comes from – or where it goes. In Central Texas, our water comes from the Colorado River. And an average family of three uses 227 gallons of water each day.
Since its inception 100 years ago, Camp Fire USA clubs have held an annual fundraiser, primarily candy sales, to teach leadership skills as well as provide an opportunity for kids to give back to and support the organization they care about. In 2011, Camp Fire USA Balcones Council is taking a bold step and is replacing its candy sales with community service projects. Business leaders will have an opportunity to participate but kids will also be asking for individual community support at a level commensurate to a box of candy.
With a focus on its century-old motto, “Give Service” and harkening back to its core value “Nature has the ability to awaken a sense of wonder and a desire for learning in children”, Camp Fire has selected for its new annual service project an environmental issue of great importance to Central Texas and the lives of our children. Called “Absolutely Incredible Kids”, this project will focus on water conservation.
Says Executive Director Rebecca Benz, “We believe that this issue is ideally suited for children’s participation because they can truly have an impact on the issue. The smallest first-graders can turn off the water while brushing their teeth; or a high-school class can do an elaborate analysis of the water usage at their school. Everyone can participate and make a difference. So we have made a three-year commitment to dedicating our annual service efforts to water conservation and increasing awareness around this issue.”
This spring, area clubs will learn about water conservation and then put that learning into action with service projects that they will create and then implement to save water. Camp Fire seeks like-minded community partners to help make this happen. Community partners and their employees will also have an opportunity to be directly involved, writing thank you letters of support and delivering them to the kids at celebratory events at the conclusion of the project.
