Local Playwright Steven Brandt adapts James M. Barrie’s classic story Peter and Wendy for children’s theatre workshop. This is a brand new adaptation written specifically for this project. We are offering acting classes that will culminate in a full production of “Neverland”
Children will be taught by members of the Velvet Rut Repertoiry Theatre Company. Velvet Rut Company Manager, Sabrina Tarbutton, will teach children basic fundamentals of acting and theatre terminology. Sabrina has been involved in theatre since the age of 13. She was on cast at the Texas Renaissance Festival, Excalibur Fantasy Faire, and Theatre Suburbia before moving to Austin in 2009. She became involved with Velvet Rut in early 2010. She is currently finishing her degree in Theatre studies.
The workshop will be held at 6800 Westgate Blvd at the Community Renaissance Marketplace. Children ages 6 to 15 are eligible to attend the workshop. If you have a child who is younger than 6 years old and would like to be involved it will be considered on a case by case basis and may require parental supervision during classes. Parents are invited and encouraged to come and see the Marketplace and meet with Sabrina for any questions or concerns you may still have and see the venue for yourselves. Contact information is listed at the bottom of this letter. The workshop will culminate in a complete production.
Classes begin Tuesday March 22nd at 4:00PM. We’ll have an orientation that day. The parents will get to meet the company members who will be assisting Sabrina during this workshop. You’ll receive scripts for the children. We’ll talk about the parts available and how casting will work. Refreshments will be served. Classes will go from 4PM to 6PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Parents will receive two free tickets to the performance per child enrolled. Tickets at the door can also be purchased at a very reasonable price. The classes will be held March 22nd, 24th, 29th, 31st, April 5th, 7th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 21st, 26th, 28th, May 3rd, 5th, 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 24th, 26th, and 31st, June 2nd (dress rehearsal), and the performance is June 3rd!
Tuition for each child is $210 for the entire workshop. This includes all classes, curriculum, a bound copy of the script, and cast photos. Parents will receive CD’s with all promotional photos on them. It does not include costumes. Parents are encouraged to make their child’s costume and patterns will be sent home for each child according to their character to assist with this. We do, however, understand that parents may not have the time to make costumes and will offer this service at an additional fee of $40.00. This fee includes labor, time, and materials and the costume will be yours to keep after the performance.
A note from Sabrina:
Thank you for considering this opportunity. I love theatre. It’s something I am passionate about. Steven Brandt, who wrote the adaptation we’re using for this workshop, is a close personal friend of mine and will be assisting me in the workshop. We are very excited about this and hope you’ll consider enrolling your child. Please feel free to contact me anytime. I’d love to answer any questions you may have.
