Perry Playground (north central Austin)

Over the weekend, we happened to be in the area and found Perry Playground for the kids to run off some of the energy.  Perry Playground is a City of Austin park that is adjacent to Highland Park Elementary and Crenshaw Athletic Club.  For the most part, the park and the school run together.  It’s quite lovely actually, especially to come on a weekend when they had free roam of both the city and school playgrounds.

Perry Playground was once a limestone quarry, and as such there are some interesting rock formations.

The kids weren’t too interested in the playground once we figured out that there are small, easy to traverse trails in the wooded areas, back near the multipurpose fields.  The trails were well traveled, short, a little narrow, but definitely easy enough for a 2 year old to handle with ease.  There were even some fall colors.

The playground is well maintained, suitable for toddlers and younger children.  The playground has two sets of swings, one with bucket swings for the littlest ones.

Older children will have more fun climbing on the two plsyscapes at the elementary school.  There are tennis courts at the park along with a crushed rock track.  Basketball courts are under the large green awning at the elementary school.

There were not too many people here.  I imagine it was because the park is tucked into the neighborhoods and somewhat blended in with the elementary school so not really visible off the road.  This would be a great park for play groups especially with younger children and on weekends when both the school and the park can be used as one large play area.
