Gourdough’s (South Austin)

In one of our smarter moves, my extended family and I trekked down early to the Gypsy Picnic at Auditorium Shores this weekend in the hopes of discovering other food trailer gems, knowing that if we showed up later, the lines would be horrendously long. This was definitely a smart move. The lines were getting ridiculous half-hour into the event, but we managed to snag a few delicious bites before packing up the kids and heading out.
The first trailer we came upon was Gourdough’s. Our intentions were to eat our way around and end up at Gourdough’s for dessert, but I decided to get in line just because it was relatively short. There were three donuts on the sample menu: Cherry Bombs, Naughty and Nice, and something else. I was stuck debating between the first two, and ended up getting the Naughty and NIce (cinnamon sugar donut) to split with hubby and the kids.
Oh, wow! That’s one AWESOME donut! We were fighting over the crumbs, if that says anything. I’m going to stick my neck out and say that Gourdough’s may be the best donut I have ever had in Austin. Period. That honor for me once belonged to Mrs. Johnson’s glazed, purchased from the drive-thru window in the middle of the night, but I don’t care what Gourdough’s puts on as a topping. The actual donut itself was incredible.
Because I love beignets more than donuts, a good donut to me is one that mimics the doughy consistency of an awesome New Orleans beignet. These were pillowy, doughy, chewy, melt-in-your mouth good.
My brother ordered the Cherry Bomb, and judging by the way he inhaled that thing, giving me the mouthful nod of approval, I take it the Cherry Bomb donut was amazing too. (The Cherry Bomb donut has glazed cherries, cinnamon, sugar, and cake mix topping.)
I didn’t realize at first that the food trailers were just set up next to booths where the ordering would take place. I assumed the trailers would be offering their full menu, so I read off the list of donuts to my kids, thinking we could order anything from the menu. My little one was so furious that he didn’t get a taste of fried chicken donut. Yeah, I know. Typing that clogged the arteries just a little bit, but tell me you aren’t drooling just a little bit at the thought of a fried chicken strip and honey donut. That’s a meal and a dessert all in one.
For you bacon lovers, they even have a bacon donut. Seriously.
We are going back to Gourdough’s.
