That makes perfect sense, Julia. Knowing how to get the best pictures possible from your camera is important. It's also important to realize that once you take the picture, you're only half finished. Use Picassa or Gimp or other free software (or Photoshop) to enhance your pictures' contrast, saturation and brightness. To use a darkroom analogy: the unedited digital picture is like the negative; the edited digital image is like the print. Enjoy!

I agree Jeff as I am 100% a Photoshop user. The only reason I don't want the editing is to keep it as level of playing field as I can for everyone who may just have a camera but no fancy editing software. It's more about the spirit of using the camera than about the photo editing for *this* particular challenge.

We put in a caveat that this DOES NOT apply to pro photographers who want to submit a picture to showcase their talent. :-)

Why no editing?
Would have a story contest but not allow the writers to edit their stories? Seriously, it makes about as much sense.
Adept editing that leverages the full extent of one's skills is as integral to making a good image as proper focusing and well-chosen lighting.
Just a thought.
