So…what are we up to now?  I thought our recent article from Dawn with pointers to take better pictures was so easy to follow and understand, that I wanted to put out this challenge.

Rules:

1.  Select ONE photography tip from the list that Dawn Fry (of Dawn Fry Photo) suggested.

2.  Take a picture that best represents your interpretation of that photography tip.

3.  Using just the honor system, submit ONE un-doctored photo (no digital editing, except for cropping and resizing) to julia (at) littleaustinite (dot) com to enter the contest.  Please tell us which tip you used.

  • Please submit photos less than 1 MB.
  • If you are a professional photographer, feel free to submit a photograph.  In all fairness to amateurs, please state in your email submission that you are a professional.  You can’t be part of the drawing, but you can tag your photos with your logo.  You are exempt from the no digital editing stipulation so you can showcase your talent to its fullest. :)

A winner (one amateur) will be selected from the pool of the photographs.  The prize: $25 SpaFinder gift card, redeemable at any of the SpaFinder participating spas which there are several in the Austin area and nationwide.

You have until Sunday January 31, 2010 before 11:59 pm CST to submit your entry. By submitting a photograph, you give Little Austinite permission to publish it on Little Austinite’s website.

Get to it!  Snap a picture!

    Why no editing?
Would have a story contest but not allow the writers to edit their stories? Seriously, it makes about as much sense.
Adept editing that leverages the full extent of one’s skills is as integral to making a good image as proper focusing and well-chosen lighting.
    Just a thought.

I agree Jeff as I am 100% a Photoshop user. The only reason I don’t want the editing is to keep it as level of playing field as I can for everyone who may just have a camera but no fancy editing software. It’s more about the spirit of using the camera than about the photo editing for *this* particular challenge.

We put in a caveat that this DOES NOT apply to pro photographers who want to submit a picture to showcase their talent. :-)

  3. Jeff Campbell says:

That makes perfect sense, Julia. Knowing how to get the best pictures possible from your camera is important. It’s also important to realize that once you take the picture, you’re only half finished. Use Picassa or Gimp or other free software (or Photoshop) to enhance your pictures’ contrast, saturation and brightness. To use a darkroom analogy: the unedited digital picture is like the negative; the edited digital image is like the print. Enjoy!
