ZuZu Restaurant (MoPac)

ZuZu Handmade Mexican Food offers exactly what their names says… though may we suggest they also should add fresh, made-to-order, and delicious to their name too.

We recently visited ZuZu MoPac, located on the service road of MoPac and 2222, after a suggestion from a Little Austinite reader. I’ve wondered about this place for several years now after having seen their inviting covered patio each time I’ve passed this shopping center. However, I never went in because I thought it was a sit down fancy schmancy restaurant. (I don’t know why I thought that!)  I was pleasantly surprised when we opened the doors and found a brightly painted, friendly and inviting, order-at-the-counter cafe that offers an extensive menu of freshly made Mexican food.

All of the dishes we ordered were made to order and brought quickly from the kitchen. You can choose what kind of tortilla you want, your meats and sides. It’s almost like a build your own plate menu! I tried the Mahi Mahi fish taco, and it was light and flavorful and served with sauce on the side. The ingredients were fresh, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. According to the ZuZu website, they tout that their vegetables, meats and fish are delivered fresh daily.

We also tried the cheese enchiladas with Mexican rice and roasted potatoes. The potatoes were so good they’re worth noting on their own! The potatoes were  perfectly spiced and just delicious. This is a Mexican restaurant and not Tex-Mex.

We have the pickiest toddler on earth, so trying new places I’m always a little nervous, but ZuZu’s kids menu certainly had enough variety that even my kiddo found something he’d eat. And an added bonus was that his quesadilla wasn’t scalding hot when it was delivered. This is definitely a kid friendly restaurant. In fact, they offer two free kids menu items each Monday-Wednesday nights from 5:30 to close, with the purchase of an adult entree.

Not only is it kid friendly, that inviting patio I’ve eyed many times would be a perfect spot to try out ZuZu hour, which is Monday-Friday from 4:30-6:30 and all day Saturday. They offer beer and wine specials and free chips and queso during ZuZu hour. I’ll definitely be trying that out when the weather gets nicer!

ZuZu has such a large menu that it will definitely take more trips to try them all. ZuZu is locally owned and operates two locations, the one at MoPac and one on Bee Caves Road.

This is one of our most favorite places to dine. The prices for the kids’ menu items are extremely reasonable, and the portions are a good size. The quality of the food is always consistent, and I like that the black beans are made without lard but are so very tasty.
