WHO: Austin Children’s Museum, Central Texas Local Section of the American Chemical Society, The University of Texas Department of Biochemistry, children and adults

WHAT: It’s a kickoff for National Chemistry Week, especially for the youngest of chemists! During ACM’s Science Sunday, children and parents will learn about chemistry through fun, interactive demonstrations and experiments led by local guest experts.

The Central Texas Local Section of the American Chemical Society will demonstrate chemical reactions using liquid nitrogen and lead children on an Elements of the Periodic Table scavenger hunt (Did you know the Periodic Table is celebrating its 140th anniversary?). Children and parents can also experiment with chemistry together by shining copper pennies, changing the color of cabbage juice, shrinking plastic and making glitter slime or play dough.

The University of Texas Department of Biochemistry will lead activities that help answer the question: When are bacteria good? Hands-on activities for the whole family include: What makes a mad cow mad?, How fast does disease spread?, Bacteria as nano-factories, What do cells need to grow?, How do cells become resistant to antibiotics?

All activities for Science Sunday are included with Museum admission ($6.50 per person. $4.50 per child 12-23 months. Children under 12 mos. free). Admission is FREE to the public every Sunday from 4-5pm.

The Science Sunday program is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund.
