Thank you Melissa G. of Good Eating Austin for sending us your idea for the educational “treasure box.” It sounds like it was a success for you.

One of my recent endeavors is the “treasure box”. Wanting to keep up the girls education over the summer, I picked up a slew of coloring book/work books at the dollar store. They included simple addition, subtraction, spelling and reading comprehension. Then I gathered a ton of cheapo toys and games that the girls would enjoy (items like colored pencils, trading cards, fake teeth, play jewelry, etc) and assigned each prize a number from 1 -5. There’s also a few higher priced toys, that we assign specific tasks, such as the oldest reading the bedtime story to me and her sister. For each page completed, they gain a point (though some of the easier pages, like coloring matching words, only count as 1/2) and then can pick a prize from the box. At the end of the month we gather up all the toys that they are not interested in and donate them to a friend who works with ABC, Any Baby Can, in east Austin.
This was a great activity during the summer and I expected them to give it up once school started up, but now whenever they come over, the first thing out of their mouths is “I want to do my workbook pages!”.
I’m proud to say that the oldest mastered her addition and subtraction over the summer and began learning multiplication before starting first grade! We’re currently working on reading comp and spelling.
