Mighty Cone is trailer awesomeness.

We have passed by the Mighty Cone trailer on a number of occasions, always making a comment as the colorful umbrella picnic tables catch our attention, “We really need to stop there and try the food.” Hubby and I both love Hudson’s on the Bend, the mighty people behind Mighty Cone, but Hudson’s is a special occasions place so it is nice to share some of Hudson’s goodness with our kids in this oh-so-casual trailer eatery.
According to Mighty Cone’s website, the story behind this was that the “Hot ‘n Crunchy” breading was developed for Hudson’s On the Bend, used on a signature trout dish. In 2002, Austin City Limit’s Festival contacted Hudson’s owner to create a dish that could be sold at ACL Fest. The creation was the Hot ‘n Crunchy Chicken which are battered chicken, wrapped around a tortilla and served in a drinking paper cone to make it portable for festival goers. The Hot ‘n Crunchy Chicken is an item on Mighty Cone’s menu that is available year round.
We came here after hubby ran a leg of the Silicon Valley Marathon Relay, and he was starving so we ordered way too much food for two adults and two kids: Hot ‘n Crunchy Shrimp Cone ($5.45), Hot ‘n Crunchy Avocado Cone ($4.95), organic All-Veggie Slider with Hudson’s gourmet fries ($5.25), and the daily special Purple Pig Cone.

Hot 'n Crunchy Avocado Cone
First off, you have to like fried foods to enjoy Hot ‘n Crunchy anything. You also have to like slightly sweet and creamy cole slaw. These cones were mouthfuls of fried something with cole slaw and tortilla. We thought that the cones had interesting flavor combinations, the shrimp better than the avocado. What was far more spectacular was the Purple Pig Cone made of slightly spicy pulled pork and purple cabbage slaw wrapped in a tortilla. Oh. My. That combo is truly gourmet food served out of a trailer.

The pulled pork with purple slaw looks awful, but it tastes soooo good.
The kids are not fans of cole slaw so I could not cajole them into taking several bites of the Hot ‘n Crunchy, but the toddler sure did like the Purple Pig. The kids loved Hudson’s gourmet fries with the slightly peppery seasoning. They took the cone of fries and devoured the whole thing.
Hubby did not think that the organic veggie sliders were special until he put the ancho sauce on top, but I thought that sliders were fantastic even without the sauce. This is not a veggie burger trying to be a hamburger, and there’s nothing Boca Burger about it. The texture was more like a good falafel patty, slightly crunchy outside with a creamy black bean blend on the inside. I thought that the ancho sauce was such a great complement, and I would buy that bottled if they sold it at the trailer.

row of trailers on the 1600 block of S. Congress
Mighty Cone’s trailer is situated on a corner of South Congress along with several other notable trailers, including Hey Cupcake, Mambo Berry, Austin Gourmet Pudding Co, Vaquero Cocina, and Baxter’s Burrito Bistro so you could get plenty of cheap treats all in a row. Mighty Cone is in the heart of SoCo, shops and restaurants all unique to Austin. There are plenty of umbrella’ed picnic tables with built-in cone-holders and high chairs. It just does not get anymore Austin and kid-friendly than this.

I should mention that parking was surprisingly easy to find since there is a parking lot behind all the trailers.

Thanks so much for your review! We’re glad to hear you guys had a good Cone experience, and we’re always looking for ways to make it even better. Keeping it kid-friendly is definitely one of our goals (we have 2 little ones ourselves). Thanks again for the feedback, and we hope to see you again.
