Between birthday parties and ridiculously hot days, we have taken our children to nearly every indoor inflatable playland in the Austin metro area, and suffice to say that nearly all of them provide the same experience though each is unique in its own way. Inflatable Wonderland is the only mall-based bounce house. Admission for children ($10) is for the entire day, but we have yet to return once we leave. Once our kids leave Inflatable Wonderland, they start fiddling with the wrist (or ankle) band out of irritation.
Tuesday and Thursday are half-price days, and several playgroups and summer camp groups schedule playtimes on these days so the crowds are inevitably higher. (I miss the BOGO coupon that used to be in the Entertainment Passbook.) The Inflatable Wonderland website loosely specifies that tickets are for ages 10 and under, but our experience has been that with toddlers and babies who are still too small to fully enjoy the bounce house experience and are coming here with a paying sibling enter for free. Parents are always free.
In the past, hubby and I were allowed up on the equipment, but a year ago, we were told both verbally and through signage attached to the equipment that adults were to stay off. This policy may have changed as the website encourages parental participation though we have not tried to get back up on the equipment as our oldest can now jump on her own, or perhaps this is just meant for parents to supervise their children at play. At Extreme Fun, another inflatable playground on Anderson Mill not far from Inflatable Wonderland, the older male staffer is fairly vigilant about calling out unruly kids and those without socks, but I have not (yet anyways) witnessed anyone policing the unruly kids to watch out for the little ones or the overly relaxed parent to supervise while at Inflatable Wonderland. Most of the time, the kids are well-behaved, but every so often, we encounter groups that force us to leave early so as not to get our littlest one trompled from the “lord of the flies” kids.
Most of the bounce equipment are easily accessible for coordinated toddlers and older kids. Four of the seven inflatables are relatively easy for the preschool and younger set to play, including a Sesame Street themed inflatable. For the babies who come here with older siblings, there is a small area with baby toys and a small slide just for them. Our kids especially like the Cars themed and Nemo themed (shark) bounce houses and the large slide in the far back corner of the place. We have been coming to Inflatable Wonderland long enough to see the bounce house equipment change (for the better), especially the ones designed for ages four and under. For those with older kids looking for an inflatable playground in the northwest Austin area, Extreme Fun might be more appropriate.
There are tables and chairs located throughout Inflatable Wonderland, and this place is large enough to accommodate strollers. The floors are covered with industrial carpet over thick spongy padding. There is a small concession stand that sells drinks and snacks. There are also areas designated for birthday parties, and because often Inflatable Wonderland offers discounts for parties that take place during the work week, we almost always see at least one table set up for a party.
We do like Inflatable Wonderland as it is a clean and safe place for our kids to play, but we always take a peek through the large glass windows to scope out whether the place is super crowded. If so, we turn around and window-shop at the mall instead. I have learned not to take my kids into any inflatable playground if the place is packed. It just gets a little too chaotic for our comfort.
Don’t forget socks!
The company which operates Inflatable Wonderland (Sock-Hop) also rents inflatables for private events.
