Berry Cool Frozen Yogurt in Cedar Park

berrycool6Thank you to all the moms who came out to Berry Cool in Cedar Park this past Friday and for the comments received thus far. The owner Jay is very much involved in the operation of his store, and he encouraged all patrons to grab sample cups to try the various flavors of yogurts.  Of the 16 flavors of frozen yogurt, all but two for the day were non-fat.  Definitely if you are counting calories, Berry Cool will be kinder (relatively) to your waistline, assuming you do not pile on the crushed candy bar or cheesecake bite toppings.  Berry Cool has one of the better fresh fruit selections of the local froyo places.

Cake batter flavor (low fat) went over quite well with just about everyone who tasted it, as did the sour apple (nonfat) which is my personal favorite here.  It tastes like a Midori Sour without the alcohol.  I sampled the honeydew melon, and that was surprisingly refreshing as well.  I watched the kids get a kick out of dispensing different flavors and picking the one that they liked best, and some decided altogether to skip the yogurt and just load up on the toppings.  To each’s own!  One mom commented that froyo places like Berry Cool are as affordable as one makes it because the yogurt cups are priced by weight.

In all, there were 11 parents with mostly toddlers in tow who joined us at Berry Cool, and the place turned a bit chaotic with the little ones running around with sugar highs.  Even with this many of us and others coming in and out of the place, I was surprised that the small place absorbed the crowd as well as it did.  The pop-techno music piping in the background combined with this many kids in a space with tile floors and minimalist decor meant that there was nothing to absorb sound, and it got rather loud.  That did not seem to deter everyone from having conversations.  I suppose as parents we are used to talking over the noise that children create, and Jay the owner and the two girls behind the registers did not even bat an eye.  Jay seemed rather tickled that this many people came into his shop at once.  We occupied multiple tables for nearly 45 minutes.  There are tables in the middle of the place, a bench along the wall with tables, and window seats with bar stools.

berrycool3Most of the frozen yogurt places around town do not have water fountains, though I believe that Jay the owner mentioned he was planning to install one.  He was very appreciative of our group coming into his froyo shop that he gave each parent a cold bottle of water, saying that he very much appreciated and understood the role of the parent.  Kudos to the owner for making a large group of parents with unruly kids feel welcomed in his place. Truly he has been the most personable owner or manager that I have encountered at the various frozen yogurt places in town.  For being just opened 3.5 weeks, this place is well run.

Berry Cool is clean and brightly lit. The staff took great pains to constantly wipe down the tables, floors, counters, and yogurt machines. Even in the midst of all the chaos that we brought into the place, they were ever vigilant in keeping the place spotless.

I believe that everyone enjoyed himself or herself, and the newbies to Berry Cool or froyo eating were quite excited about the find.  Berry Cool and Yogurt Planet are currently at the top of my list of best frozen yogurt places in the Austin area.  Onto trying out the rest of them…

kind to the waist????Have you checked the sugar in yogurt? A common misconception, you’re not being kind to your waist at all by eating yogurt.

Well…yes, the sugar level is high. I probably should have written “kinder,” but that is relative to eating full fat ice cream which has as much if not more sugar. That was meant as a tongue-in-cheek comment :-)
