Choo Choo! All Aboard!

Seeing a train going down the tracks on MoPac is a really exciting sight for my 2 year old. But getting to RIDE a train nearly blows his mind! Luckily here in the Ausitn area there are two kiddie size trains available.

The Zilker Zephyr departs from the train depot near Barton Springs pool, every hour for a 25-minute ride around Zilker Park. Rides are $2.75 for adults and $1.75 for kids, 12 and under (CASH ONLY!).  You travel along water and under bridges and through tunnels. It’s really exciting stuff for the kiddos! Rides tend to fill up on the weekdays in the summer time before the Texas heat hits. So get there early! And watch out for branches from lower lying trees– this ride takes you a little closer to nature in some parts.

The second train we love is the Cedar Rock Railroad, at Williamson County Regional Park off of 1431 & Sam Bass in Cedar Park. This miniature train runs year-round on weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $2.50 per person (kids under 1 are free) and cash only, as well. This train ride takes you around 1.3 mile track through trees and open fields. During soccer and lacrosse seasons, this is a really fun ride for the kids on Saturdays because the train passes through all of the sports fields.

My kids love these two trains too. I would also add that there is a concession stand near the Zilker train where lots of kids like to buy snow cones on hot days. I have witnessed on a few occasions bee stings from the bees hovering around the kids with snow cones.

The Cedar Rock Railroad reminded me a lot of the train at the Austin zoo. Cool train, not that much scenery, though. Our favorite is still the Zilker Zepher!
